Following are excerpts from an interview with Egyptian Islamic Jihad member Tareq Al-Zumar, which aired on Al-Kahera Wal-Nas Tv on August 1, 2012. Al-Zumar was released from prison where he served a life sentence for complicity in the assassination of President Anwar Sadat.

Interviewer: Who do you consider to be a martyr – President Sadat or [his assassin] Al-Islambuli? Which of them is a martyr?

Tareq Al-Zumar: Khaled Al-Islambuli, obviously. Without the slightest doubt.

Interviewer: Jehan Sadat had the courage to ask for your release from prison. Will you have the courage to visit Jehan Sadat, to apologize for the assassination of her husband, President Anwar Sadat?

Tareq Al-Zumar: No. I may visit her to thank her for her efforts, but with regard to the issue of Anwar Sadat, it is over and done with. There were objective reasons and historical circumstances for this. I think that we should know...

Interviewer: She displayed courage. What about you?

Tareq Al-Zumar: I definitely have the courage to thank her, and I will do so soon, Allah willing.
