Ziyad Ibrahim 'Asfan: Even before these events began, in 1998-1999,
Al-Qaeda's policy was to recruit as many young men as possible
from the Arabian Peninsula
to attend courses in religious law – not military courses. The military courses would perhaps come later, but at first, the courses were in religious law, in Afghanistan.

In 1998-1999, huge numbers of young men left for Afghanistan, and each one, upon his return, brought these ideas back with him, and that’s how this spread among the youth.

(They said:) Get us as many men as you can, aged 20-25 – the new generation,
which has exceptional enthusiasm. They have no obligations in this world yet – they have no wife, children, job, responsibility, or anything. Bring as many such young men as possible in order to plant in their minds the ideology of pure monotheism, the ideology of accusing these tyrants of heresy, and taking action against them when ordered to and when the opportunity presents itself.

In most cases, they had no job. They were not married, and had no children or work. They had absolutely no education. The third things was their great enthusiasm. I remember spending a night with one of them – a single night – and by dawn he was promising me to carry out a martyrdom operation.

Abdallah Khoja: My favorite was the machine guns – the heavy Guryanov, the Shilka and the Dshka - all of these are anti-aircraft machine guns. I was trained to use them and assemble them, and I became quite an expert. We are talking about light arms – Kalashnikov, pistols, Makarov. Training lasted for about a month, and I liked these weapons. I wanted to be sent to the front to fight the Northern Alliance.

Ziyad Ibrahim 'Asfan: It's as though everything was in preparation for the day operations would be carried out in Saudi Arabia. When these operations would take place, and since there are people who incite and influence over there, young men would volunteer in large numbers for these operations, and for the Jihad in Saudi Arabia, in order to commit martyrdom for the sake of Allah.
